چکیده

We study two models for the generation of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) with unequal, fixed-length sections: an isotropic model, in which the orientations of all the sectional PMD vectors are taken to be randomly and uniformly varying across the Poincaré sphere, and a rotator model, in which all sections are taken to be linearly birefringent waveplates randomly rotatable with respect to one another. We describe the implementation of importance sampling for firstand second-order PMD in both models, including a targeting method for first-order PMD. We then use analytical and numerical methods to reconstruct the statistics of firstand second-order PMD for the two models. Our results show that the statistical properties of PMD depend significantly on the specific details of how PMD is generated.

Comparison of Polarization Mode Dispersion Emulators

We analyze polarization mode dispersion (PMD) emulators comprised of a small number of sections of polarizationmaintaining fibers with polarization scattering at the beginning of each section. Unlike previously studied devices, these emulators allow the emulation of a whole ensemble of fibers. We derive analytical expressions and determine two main criteria that characterize the quality of PMD ...

Autocorrelation function for polarization mode dispersion emulators with rotators.

We derive a recursion relation for the frequency autocorrelation function of the polarization dispersion vector for polarization mode dispersion emulators with rotators. The autocorrelation function has a nonzero background for an emulator with a fixed number of sections. This background diminishes slowly as the number of sections grows. Randomizing the section lengths removes the autocorrelati...

Deterministic approach to polarization mode dispersion

Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) is considered to be one of the most serious obstacles in the high speed optical telecommunication systems. This thesis focuses on a deterministic approach to both compensation and emulation of PMD. Most PMD compensation schemes in the literature rely on feedback loops to search for the optimum control parameters in the compensator. These schemes often suffer f...

Attosecond-resolution measurement of polarization mode dispersion in short sections of optical fiber.

optical, fiber optics, photonic subsystems, photonics, lightwave components A new technique is presented for measurement of the differential group delay (DGD) between principal states of polarization of an optical device, with a demonstrated accuracy and resolution of roughly 50 attoseconds (50 x 10.18 s). Accuracy was directly assessed by measurement of a crystal quartz DGD standard. For the f...

Polarization mode dispersion and polarization dependent loss in optical fiber systems

In this paper we examine the statistics of combined polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) and the impact on pulses in optical fiber systems. The probability density functions of PDL, of the differential group delay’s (DGD) real and imaginary part and of the angle between the principal states of polarization (PSPs) are investigated by numerical simulations. The...
